Iran Team Reunites in Turkey After Players Withdraw Asylum Bids
The Iranian women's national team has finally made their way back home after a tense journey, crossing the Turkish border into Iran after a controversial Asian Cup tournament in Australia. The team has been at a high-risk period, having been referred to as "wartime traitors" by the Iranian media after they chose not to sing the national anthem following the U.S. and Israeli strikes in Iran. Despite the six women, as well as the team's staff, applying for humanitarian asylum in Australia, fearing persecution, the five women have since withdrawn their applications, rejoining the team in Turkey as they make their way back home. The two women, however, have opted to stay in Australia, where they are reportedly training with an A-League team, with the Iranian Football Association stating that the women who are returning home will be "embraced by their families.
